Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any questions regarding the vignette, try browsing our FAQ section to find a quick and easy answer.

Do I need to keep the receipt when I buy the vignette?

Keeping the receipt is not obligatory, but we do recommend it. You will need to provide the receipt (especially for shorter-term vignettes – i.e. 1-week, 1-month and half-year vignettes) in case you need to purchase a substitute vignette and validity is not visible on the old removed vignette. You will also need to provide the receipt at any point of sale (or »DarsGo servis« centres in Ljubljana and Lopata rest area) in case you wish to refund the vignette due to inadequate quality.

Are priority vehicles exempt from purchasing the vignette? Are there any exceptions to who needs to buy the vignette?

In accordance with the Road tolling act, vehicles that are exempt from paying toll and thus exempt from purchasing the vignette, are the following: police, rescue and fire brigade vehicles, escort vehicles (and other vehicles in the convoy), Slovenian Armed Forces military vehicles, foreign military vehicles entrusted with homeland protection, international peace missions and other defensive and protective tasks (defined by international treaties), vehicles entrusted with providing humanitarian relief for people affected by war, natural and other disasters and armed conflicts, and vehicles intended for tolling and road maintencance. Detailed information on this topic can be found on this link.

How does DARS check if vehicles have the vignette or not?

Vignette control is carried out by the Police, Financial administration of the Republic of Slovenia and tolling supervisors. DARS is a minor offence authority in these matters.

What types of vignettes are available and how much do they cost?

There are three different toll-rate categories within the valid tolling system. Toll-rate category 1 includes motorcycles and other one track motor vehicles. You can purchase a 1-year (55 EUR), 6-month (30 EUR) or 1-week (7.50 EUR) vignette for any vehicle in this category. 2A toll-rate category includes cars, combined vehicles, caravans, and other two-track motor vehicles whose height above the front axle is up to 1.3 metres, and whose maximum permissible weight does not exceed 3,500 kg. You can purchase a 1-year (110 EUR), 1-month (30 EUR) or 1-week (15 EUR) vignette for any vehicle in this category. 2B toll-rate category includes all other two-track motor vehicles whose height above the front axle is 1.30 m or more, and whose maximum permissible weight does not exceed 3,500 kg. You can purchase a 1-year (220 EUR), 1-month (60 EUR) or 1-week (30 EUR) vignette for any vehicle in this category.

Is vignette purchase mandatory for both Slovenian and foreign users of Slovenian motorways? Is there a price difference for Slovenian and foreign users?

Purchase is mandatory for Slovenian and foreign users. The valid price list applies to both Slovenian and foreign users.

Is toll still being collected at toll stations after the implementation of the vignette?

After the implementation of the vignette in 2008, only freight vehicles whose maximum permissible weight exceeds 3.5 tonnes pay toll at the toll stations.

After the implementation of the vignette in 2008, only freight vehicles whose maximum permissible weight exceeds 3.5 tonnes pay toll at the toll stations.

Since 1 July 2008, a vignette system has been in place for all Slovenian motorways and expressways managed by DARS, regardless of their length. Vignette use is mandatory for all vehicles whose maximum permissible weight does not exceed 3.5 tonnes – even for sections which had previously not hosted toll stations.

Is the vignette transferable between vehicles within the same category?

The vignette is not transferable between vehicles.

What is the price of the vignette between point A and point B, if said route includes toll roads?

The price of the vignette is not subject to the distance driven, but rather depends on a specified time period, within which you are entitled to unlimited use of the entire motorway network.

Do I need to purchase a vignette to use the four-lane motorway between Tomačevo roundabout and Črnuče? Do I need it to use service roads next to the Ljubljana ring, e.g. between the Zaloška and Letališka roads?

To use the Ljubljana ring road, you do not need to purchase a vignette, as it is not managed by DARS. Vignette is mandatory if you wish to continue along the H3 road – Ljubljana North. Toll road supervisors monitor the toll roads before and after the Tomačevo roundabout. This means that toll road supervisors will not stop you if you do not drive on the H3 expressway. The same goes for service roads, which do not require the vignette, e. g. the road between Zaloška and Letališka. As soon as your drive on the Ljubljana motorway ring, use of the vignette becomes mandatory.
